Concept & Objectives

The Concept

SchoolMedDiet aims to create a long-term transformation in Mediterranean dietary behaviour by fostering awareness and adoption of the Mediterranean Diet through a multi-level approach. It delivers a distinctive, high-impact contribution to PRIMA’s mission by transforming school food systems across the Mediterranean through a unique combination of digital, behavioural and policy innovation. The objectives are directly aligned with PRIMA SRIA Operational Objective 6 on “Nutrition and Health” and with the Call’s ambition to empower younger generations through transformative food-system interventions.

SMART Goals

Our Five SMART Objectives

Each objective is Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound.

01

M1-M24

Establish 4 national Living Labs

Implement Living Labs in a selected school in each of the four countries — Greece, Malta, Morocco and Tunisia — co-designed with students, educators, families and municipal actors, with particular attention to girls, youth aged 15–18 and under-served communities.

02

M7–M24

Develop and deploy digital & experiential education tools

Design and implement two core digital tools: an AI-powered Food Assistant mobile app with chatbot functionality offering personalised dietary guidance, and Virtual Reality learning modules showcasing Mediterranean food heritage, sustainable agriculture and nutrition.

03

M25–M36

Co-develop MD-aligned public food procurement education tools

Engage municipalities and school authorities in co-designing and testing procurement models that operationalise Mediterranean Diet principles — local sourcing, seasonality, plant-forward menus and food-waste reduction — in line with EU Green Public Procurement criteria and sustainable-diet guidelines.

04

M30–M36

Deliver policy briefs and the SchoolMedDiet Toolkit

Produce four national policy briefs (Greece, Malta, Morocco, Tunisia) and one cross-Mediterranean policy roadmap to support institutional uptake of the Mediterranean Diet in schools, together with the SchoolMedDiet Toolkit for replication — including the Living Lab methodology and digital resources.

05

M21–M36

Achieve a 20% increase in MD adherence

Improve Mediterranean Diet adherence scores among students in the four national Living Labs, using the interventions and digital tools developed across the project and measured through a shared evaluation framework.
